Virtual City and Landscape Models

Virtual city and landscape models represent topographic, radiometric, physical and functional aspects of relevant objects in urban and rural areas.The geo-objects are modeled not only by their shape, size, location and visual appearance but also in terms of their importance and thematic properties and relationships. Such structured information allow a variety of applications - from visualization or analysis (e.g., "Urban Data Mining"), simulations (e.g. urban climate),  to the organization of communication of specialized applications by expert data associated with the 3D model. Virtual globes ,such as Google Earth, are just the beginning of an extensive use of virtual 3D models. The challenges for research are: information modeling, automation of information retrieval, information integration and synchronization, and process modeling.

Inter alia, by:

  • Coordination and pooling of scientific work in the field of "virtual structure, city and landscape models" at the TU Berlin,
  • Formation of a platform for the development and application of interdisciplinary cooperation projects and for the interdisciplinary exchange and discussion among students of different fields,
  • short notice applications for collaborative research projects at the "DFG", the Federal Ministry for Education and Research and other funding institutions,
  • Medium-term development of a collaborative research project of all cluster members as a "DFG"-project or as a Federal Ministry for Education and Research joint project.

Cluster Objectives

(Further) development:

  • of information modeling on several scales of detail, or at crossings, particularly the automated aggregation of information on the level of city and landscape models for information-structure models,
  • of automation of collection processes of interpretation and the generation-semantic information in the modeling of the objects,
  • of information integration and synchronization of the divergent model building between the disciplines in "Habitat Design" and
  • of the modeling and evaluation of spatiotemporal change processes in habitats for city and landscape planning, building and construction planning and real estate management, as well as
  • the integration of urban and landscape modeling in further academic education courses.
