Safety and the City

The topic "security/safety" has experienced an increase in importance:
there a new definitions for the security requirements of infrastructure, introducing and simulating drafts for menace scenarios, new techniques for danger defense and emergency services. Within the newly created security/safety landscape there is a deviance in the general public which is tied together with crime, terrorism, war and natural disasters. Accordingly, juridical procedures are adapted. A new geography of safety is created on the basis of information and communication technologies which ignores national territories and borders and instead links traditionally unconnected spaces in the city.

Numerous development trends in the security/safety area are connected to urban development, urban policy and the implementation of public order and safety. The topic ranges from areas such as the subjective perception to other fields like the objective production of safety and security. Anyhow, the production of safety influences the perception and vice versa. This rationalization increases with every further step taken from production towards perception. All aspects of the research cluster "Safety and the City" can be arranged on a curve according to this:

For example, by:

  • Preparation and application for at least two research projects, for example, within the scope of the national research program "Civil Security" and/or the 7-th EU-research program,
  • specific assignment, care or elaboration as well as interlinking of thesis projects,
  • Preparation and realization of a specialist conference,
  • Preparation and realization of a book project.
