Research Cluster Design and Construct

The method of "designing" is fundamentally different to those of other scientific disciplines. It is not characterized by complexity and contradictoriness and, therefore, unambiguously determinable. The science-theoretical principle of comprehensive knowledge and results, if you know about the basic conditions and theories, can only be applied to designing in a limited way. There are, however, certain facts which define the "evil problems" of designing. For example, you cannot describe problems in an enclosed manner. Consequently, while working at the design solution the problem is examined along the design theory analytically. Known as "tacit knowledge" (Michael Polany), all designers are aware of this and apply it as a basis for their individual design strategies.

The research cluster examines the relations and links between designing/sketching and scientific work. Architecture theory and scientific work about the design of space is largely influences by disciplines such as urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture and the engineer's disciplines. However, their viewpoint is dominated by social-scientific or historical-scientific perspectives and the related theories and methods. There is a gap between science from these scientific areas and the practical work of the designers. Additionally, there is a disproportion, if not even a misunderstanding, between theory at the universities and the practical work of design. Therefore, the questions is, if independent models, theories and methodologies have to invented for designing, in order to master the "evil problems" and to better describe the designing of space in urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture and civil engineering. In addition, it is also about the question whether the method of "designing" could offer an independent contribution for scientific disciplines as a model of problem solving and knowledge production.

For the first time in German history, the topic of "design" becomes a main focus of scientific research, through the work of this research cluster. Moreover, it creates the following offers:

  1. Creation of a scientific profile within the disciplines of design
  2. The doctor's candidate lecture as the core of the cluster offers an disciplines-covering communication structure for the younger scientific generation and by the realization of conferences and related publications effective in public
  3. Design theory, academic design education and design practice are understood as a synergetic unit.

Cluster Objectives

The objective of the research cluster is to apply for and set up a DFG-funded postgraduate's research training group. Single DFG-research project proposals are intended to deepen the discussion about the method of "designing".
