Urban Metabolism – Sustainable Urban Transfair

Lupe

The future role and capacity of cities will be influenced by their relations to the surrounding. Exchange processes between the city and surrounding areas, particularly in relation to environmental, landscape, resource and social aspects (such as employment, housing and recreational relations and commuting) will determine the future growth of cities in the world, or even be limiting factors for the urban development. In most of the world's urban-rural relations the interactions between the periphery and high-density urban areas has to be put on a new and fair balance. This two-way balance between town and country needs to be committed to sustainability. Therefore, the research cluster is intended to contribute to the definition of urban-rural material flows and to provide a newly defined "Sustainable Urban Transfair".

Based on these assumptions the following theses are formulated for the research cluster:

  1. Today's urban-rural relations are not sustainable.
  2. There are different models of urban-rural relations with different sustainability outcomes.
  3. The interactions between the different material flows and forms of relationship are essential in order to work towards sustainable urban-rural relations.

Inter alia, this will be achieved by:

  • Preparation and application for at least three research projects supported by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, the Federal Environment Ministry, the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, the German Environmental Foundation and/or the 7th EU Research Programme
  • Preparation and application for a joint "DFG" project.
